Labor Day 2010: Turn Off. Tune In.

by Nicolette Beard on September 6, 2010

in Labor

I am not an early adopter of technology. In fact, I rarely answer my cell phone. As a society, technology has become so enmeshed in our daily lives, that I doubt few of us even question its value.

The danger of always being on and available 24/7 is that it creates an illusion of activity and connectedness when, in truth, we’re less engaged with our family, community and inner self. We’re losing much of our solitude and our ability to see the world around and inside us.

Compulsive and obsessive behaviors are warning enough. It’s not called “CrackBerry” for nothing.

Without time for reflection, we will continue to add layers of blankets, burying ourselves deeper and deeper into un-remembering. The American Labor Movement of the late 19th Century was inspired into birth for good reason. It is true that “labor is endless” but to what end?

How do we define true labor when we’ve exchanged a true sense of purpose for sleek plastic? I’m no Luddite but, perhaps for just one day, we can all “turn off and tune in.” That would be just the opposite of the “turn on and tune out” of the 60s Generation.

I think it’s time to start a new trend.

(To my non-U.S. readers: Labor Day is the first Monday in September, observed as a holiday in the United States and Canada in honor of working people.)

Transcending Crises in Virgo

by Michael Beard on August 25, 2010

in Esoteric Astrology,Purpose of Life

Virgo signifies the crisis of the birth place. The word crisis comes from the Greek krisis which is from krinein meaning to separate or decide.

When you decide to give birth to a deeper and more meaningful part of yourself, you separate yourself from your past. This creates the crisis because you realize that you can no longer live as your old self.

Crises come into being when human beings, individually and collectively, begin to see that the hindrances which they created in the past are threatening the possibility of their own survival.

Torkom Saraydarian, Cosmic Shocks, p. 129

Hindrances exist when there is something in your thoughts and actions which are preventing the expression of your future vision.

Virgo, as the Mother, reveals and gives birth to the vision of a beautiful future. One of the mysterious names for the Christ, or World Savior, is “He Who is for Her, the purpose of existence.”

This illustrates the self-forgetfulness and unselfishness of the Mother. On an individual level, it means that your life, conveyed through the mental, emotional and physical aspects, is dedicated to expressing a great purpose and vision.

Virgo denotes the outer world or outer expression. When you dedicate your life to a higher purpose, you want to express beauty and goodness through right human relations. The crisis happens because there are forces and habits within you and within humanity that are trying to prevent the manifestation of that vision.

The crisis of the birth place is brought on by the planetary rulers of Virgo.
Mercury rules on the orthodox level. Mercury is fourth ray, which is the ray that creates harmony out of conflict. Mercury creates conflict so that you can overcome it with the wise use of your mind. Then Mercury begins to build the bridge to the future vision.

The moon rules on the discipleship level. The moon represents the old form, or way of life, that is being transcended. The moon veils Vulcan, which is a first ray planet. As you sincerely strive to work through the crisis, you start to pull the veil away. Through Vulcan’s influence, you can demonstrate the persistence and determination to break the hindrance and work through the crisis until the vision is manifested at the appointed time.

Jupiter is the Hierarchical ruler and expresses the second ray of Love-Wisdom. Once the crisis is transcended, love prevails. The wisdom of the Christ within becomes the ruler of your life. Your vision expands and expresses through ever-increasing avenues of service. It is through this expansion that you recognize the beauty hidden in Virgo and in the crisis of the birth place.

We usually think that crises are synonymous with pain, suffering, self-pity, complications and problems. This may be true in general, because of the reaction of the personality. On the other hand, a crisis can be a joy-bringing event for which we wait with elevated expectancy because we feel in our heart that the crisis is an opportunity, the wave we have been waiting for to “surf” upon. Such an approach to a crisis is the result of a response to, and an assimilation of, the energies which bring in the treasures of the Higher Worlds.

In an atmosphere of joyful expectancy, crises become opportunities, moments of enlightenment and initiation, moments of great opportunity to demonstrate all our aspirations to serve and sacrifice.
