Do we ever wonder about the cumulative effect of life’s little irritations?
Beyond the obvious disturbances like air and noise pollution (Whose wonderful Memorial Day weekend wasn’t interrupted by lawn movers and leaf blowers?), these annoyances and the irritation they cause prevent higher ideas from penetrating not only the planet, but also ourselves.
“Emanations of irritation deny entrance to the thoughts We send.”
Leaves of Morya’s Garden, Vol. I, #249, Agni Yoga Society
When we let our temper or daily excitements escalate to cause irritation in our mood and our mind, a sediment (imperil) on the nerve channels (nadis) builds up over time which causes serious damage to our long term health and well being. (Irritation: The Destructive Fire, by Torkom Saraydarian.)
When world events aggravate us, the pressure felt creates more irritation in our system, especially among sensitive people. The irritation surrounding the planet keeps mankind shrouded in mist.
“Fatigue and irritation can deprive one of an urgent message. One must know how to reach Us over and above one’s sensations.”
Illumination, III:II:14
Apply mentally all your irritations, aggravations, annoyances and excitations and place them in the context of world events and the Plan for humanity. Then picture yourself within the boundless universe.
You will see there is no place for even the smallest mood of discontent.
“Simply walk forward without wincing. Withholding irritation, you create a new sheath for the spirit.”
Illumination, I:X:8
Update: Four hours after posting this article, the combination of business pressures, family demands and an unexpected change in plans with friends created a blanket of irritation over me. I realized that fatigue (from overwork and overexertion) was the culprit.
My new mantram: Guard against fatigue. On that note, I’m going to bed early.
