Virgo Full Moon | 2009
Article by Michael Beard
Finally, a ray of light shown through, piercing the darkness of the black hole that I had slipped into. Was it someone that pushed me in, or just my own inertia? It hardly matters now, for this one beam of light is as beautiful and powerful as a sword. I realize that It is a response to the call that I made to my own Soul to free me from the darkness of inertia.
The light led me out, and I realized that I have been in a deep cavern, a cave. Virgo is called the cave — that dark, deep place of experience when the light is revealed. For how could we know it was light, if we have not been in darkness. I had to fall so low in order to understand the power of the light.
As I take a breath of fresh air I think, “Yes, that’s it!” There are three crosses: the Cardinal, the Fixed and the Mutable; and there are four elements: Air, Fire, Water and Earth.
Virgo is the one sign that is upon the lowest cross, the Mutable, and the lowest element, Earth. Virgo is the lowest of the lowest. The humblest of the humblest. For only in the deepest humility, can we recognize our own power. Only in the darkness of the cave can we perceive the magnetic potency of a beam of light.
It is no accident that Labor Day (in the USA anyway) falls in September, in Virgo. It is a Herculean labor to create out of the darkness of inertia, a beautiful expression. To create out of the confusion of our planet, a sacred vision. To believe that in spite of outer circumstances that appear bleak on the surface, that there is a magnificent future in store for ourselves and those of humanity who have the sensitivity to respond.
The beauty of the Mother is that she does not think about herself. Her only concern is for the Child that she is giving birth to. She is the present giving birth to the future. Her labor is to live in self-forgetfulness and to present to the world the vision for the future. For “Virgo hides the light which irradiates the world in Aquarius.”
O Mother of the World I am grateful for your sacrifice, for your beauty and dignity. You are the oldest of the signs and have been here since the previous solar system. You, with your hidden ruler Vulcan, have built the forms, age after age, that are meant to reveal the light. You, who with your brother sign Leo, make up the Sphinx that waits for those who are ready to be initiated into the deeper wisdom. You watch to see who is ready to begin to express the Hidden Glory, the Christ.
We go into the cave when all paths are cut off, and we have nowhere else to go. We have to find what is the most essential.
In the book Agni Yoga #424, Master Morya states that “The measure of success is the degree of necessity. You may be sure that one would not leap across an abyss without absolute necessity. The more unavoidable the necessity, the nearer is the step of victory. Let the most dire necessity arise!”
And from Aum #371, we read:
Man does not arrive at an understanding of his power without a Guide. Many different traps are hidden on man’s path. Each sheltered manifested viper hopes to conceal from man that which is most precious. As a traveler who has lost his way, he does not know in what element to seek success; yet the treasure is within himself.
The wisdom of all the ages enjoins — Know thyself! In this counsel attention is turned to the most secret, which has been ordained to become revealed. The fiery might, called for the time being psychic energy, will give to man the path to future happiness. But let us not hope that people will easily recognize their heritage. They will invent all kinds of arguments in order to bring disrepute upon each discovery of the energy. They will pass over in silence the decreed quality of their advancement, but, none the less, the path is one!”
