Winter Solstice 2009
2009 Winter Solstice
Article by Michael Beard
This is the time of the Winter Solstice. “Solstice” comes from the Latin and means ‘the sun stands or is stationary.’ In the Northern hemisphere at this time, the sun is at its lowest point above the horizon. It is ‘stationary’ because it appears to rise at the same spot for several days. It is said that the sun is stabilizing. This stationary moment of the Winter Solstice is the beginning of the sign Capricorn, as well as the end of the sign Sagittarius.
In Sagittarius, the “fires of God” enter into our physical, emotional and mental mechanisms. To those who are striving, this process reveals the obstacles that are blocking the Path to the higher worlds. Those who respond to these realizations and eliminate the cause of the obstructions break through the obstacles and enter the gate of Capricorn, climbing higher up the mountain of achievement.
Those that react to what is revealed, and cannot change, enter into the gate of Capricorn and become more trapped in matter. For Capricorn is the sign of the highest spiritual achievement as well as the densest form of materialism.
The time of the Winter Solstice is when we can stand firm and stabilize our minds in the Soul, represented by the Sun. It is a time to reflect upon what we experienced during the battle in Scorpio, and with the powerful purifying fires of Sagittarius. Did those experiences help free our Soul for greater expression of light, love and power?
In essence, this is the dynamic symbol of the birth of the Christ, or the Sun God, at this sacred time.
As a direct response to the fire of our own conscious striving, we gain an opportunity to give birth to a greater, deeper, more conscious and more inclusive part of ourselves. This is our gift to the world.
